Meet CrownedByD

Hey ladies I’m Deon, but you can call me D. I would like to share with you all a little back story on how “crownedbyd” came along.

In 2015, I worked at a marketing firm. An incident with my former boss projected me to quit my job and start my own business.

This was my why. He didn’t like my Marley twists. My hair was in its natural state, twisted into a Marley twist protective style as I didn’t want to fuss with my hair every morning. One day, my boss approached me and said, “Hey D, your hair looks nice. But I like you better with your hair straightened,” (extensions). I was shattered and confused but I did not feel like being bothered with a lawsuit as I was the only black woman working there at the time. I decided to quit. I quit because no one should inflict their personal preference on how you wear your hair and I sure wasn’t going to change my hair just to please them or the company for that matter.

Two months after quitting, I made my official business page on Instagram crownedbyd. I slowly began to showcase my talent. Six months later, my page went from 67 followers to 10k. Can you believe it?!

'Don’t let anyone tell you your black hair isn’t beautiful because it is. Instead of falling into the trap of thinking my hair wasn’t enough, I decided to make natural protective hairstyles a more popular thing. '
